Smurf was another girl from the huge family of Jeep, Spiggy and Phantom, but she was about 18 months old when she came to live here with her other sister, Zillah. Smurf was a great beauty who had taken some top prizes at rat shows in her youth and that seems to have gone to her head, because she was quite a prima donna. She was also, however, a very affectionate rat and a great character.

Smurf had not been here very long when she developed a tumour on her shoulder, which can be seen here in her photo. This was removed and, on the vet's advice, sent for testing. Sadly, the tumour was malignant and the growth returned within a few weeks of surgery. Eventually it impaired her lungs and she had to be put to sleep.
