Dougal and his brother Hamish were among a large number of rats abandoned at the Blue Cross Rescue in Oxfordshire. They came to live here when they were six weeks old and they were incredibly tiny, even for such young babies. Dougal was always a very small boy, but he was a feisty little redhead who would take on anyone! His eyesight was very bad, so perhaps he just couldn't see who his opponents were. He was a funny little rat, he didn't like other rats much but he wasn't a "people rat" either, he lived in a little world all his own, and so long as his routine wasn't disrupted he was perfectly happy. He had health problems all his life, with a rattly nose and other respiratory problems that required treatment with steroids and sometimes antibiotics. For all that, he lived a long life and died just a few days short of his third birthday.
